We at TOM'S shoes want to share a little about our mission and explain where our idea of Day Without Shoes originated:
TOMS Shoes is a philanthropic organization focused on giving a pair of shoes to children in need. TOMS Shoes began in 2006 via small business owner, Blake Mycoskie. After a trip to Argentina, Blake Mycoskie was inspired to give shoes to the children in need. Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. A leading cause of disease in these countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases. This spontaneous, charitable desire is fundamentally different from other philanthropic models, for TOMS Shoes is built on the most simplistic model: One for One. For every pair of Argentinean Alpargata styled shoe bought, TOMS Shoes matches it and donates it to a child in Argentina.
